The Diploma

The Diploma in Health and Social Care is designed to enable learners to develop a sound understanding of policy, theory and practice in health and social care. It provides learners with an opportunity to appreciate the challenges facing professionals, services users, individuals, care workers and policy makers in the UK and abroad today. 

Health and social care is a vast service sector undergoing rapid change, with new government initiatives giving it a higher profile than ever. Priorities on the healthcare agenda include being more responsive to patient needs, and preventing illness by promoting a healthy lifestyle. The focus in frontline health and social care is on giving service-users more independence, choice and control. These developments mean there’s greater demand for well-trained and multi-skilled people across a range of rewarding employment opportunities.

Why choose a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care?

This course is a level 2 professional Health and Social care qualificaiton, offered through Edexcel or Cache awarding bodies and allows companies to develop specialsits through specific Pathways

The programme is designed to meet national standards for Health and Social care in the UK and is internationally recognised. It is underpinned by sector skills council for Health and Social care, Skills for Care and Skills for Health, who combined ensure the standards across both Health and Social care meets identified needs of the industry.

The course is suited to managers with a number of years of experience, who are seeking to consolidate their management and leadership skills and knowledge, or to establish a strong foundation for further career development. However, the course is available to everyone who is capable of reaching the required standards. Access to the course and progression are barrier free.

The programme prepares managers to perform confidently and effectively as a member of the management team. It has proved to be particularly effective in organisations undergoing significant cultural change, experiencing real growth, with a young and inexperienced management team, or where individuals are promoted from technical into management roles. It is also open to people returning to work after a career break.

The Structure of the Qualification

The level 2 diploma in health and social care (adults) for England (QCF) is made up of 46 credits or more from three different groups.

  • ƒƒGroup A is made up of 9 mandatory units = 24 credits
  • Group B is made up of knowledge only units that offers the opportunity to undertake either a generic or specialist learning disabilities or dementia pathway. There is a choice of units within the rules of combination and these are stipulated in order to achieve the appropriate pathway.
  • Group C provides the opportunity to take a variety of competence units that reflect job roles. These includes a range of both specialist pathways and generic units.

What areas does the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care cover?

The course consists of a series of learning units of which 9 are mandatory covering a variety of topics;

  • Introduction to Communication in Health & Social Care Settings
  • Introduction to Personal Development in Health & Social Care Settings
  • Introduction to Equality and Inclusion in Health & Social Care Settings
  • Introduction to Duty of Care in Health & Social Care Settings
  • Principles of Safeguarding and Protection in Health & Social Care Settings
  • The Role of the Health & Social Care Worker
  • Implement Person-Centred Approaches in Health & Social Care Settings
  • Contribute to Health & Safety in Health & Social Care
  • Handle Information in Health & Social Care Settings

Learners then chose optional units dependant on job role or vocaitonal specialised area  Pathway

How is the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care course delivered?

The course is delivered by way of flexible learning consisting of

  • induction to the programme, explanation of the roles, responsiblities and expectations
  • Portfolio containing all relevent informaiton on which to store, house and compile evidence
  • Eportfolio
  • workshops, focusing on the core knowledge requirements
  • comprehensive packs of learning materials
  • tutor support via email, telephone, face-to-face, elearning – on line learning materials
  • one to one sessions with an allocated tutor
  • mentor support from employers
  • group and Peer support through networking with fellow learners to share experience and expertise within the learning community

Where do the workshops take place?

We have delivery venues throughout Merseyside. However we generally use employers premises, where available and suitable or conference centres can be utilised to accomodate large groups.  Employer premises have a dual effect, allows learners to benefit from experiencing contact with fellow colleagues builds team morale and develops effective team working.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed via completion of workbooks that include assignments, case studies, work products and application of skills, evidence of how you complete your work.  Also through observation by assessors supported by testimonies from colleagues and managers.
